BARRY MCGEE OPENING AT PRISM GALLERY IN WEHO
Tonight PRISM Gallery opens its second show with contemporary artist Barry McGee. If the Os Gemeos show was any evidence of what an artist with a vision can do to a space, then the promise of a site-responsive installation from the brilliant mind of McGee is something to get excited about. Check out what PRISM has to say about the show and find details below:

PRISM is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Barry McGee. In his second exhibition at the gallery, McGee integrates his visual language, with its striking geometric compositions, color fields and recurring characters into a site-responsive installation that converts the gallery into a dynamic and vibrant space. Viewers are immersed in purposeful chaos reflected in McGee’s drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures and photographs.

MIXED MEDIA: BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THE HUNDREDS

Recently Bobby Hundreds wrote an insightful and inspiring story from the youth of his now trend-setting company The Hundreds. We now take a look into the screenprinting shop that story created with this behind the scenes video of Mixed Media Productions in Downtown LA.

Originally the shop turned down Bobby Hundreds until he could convince them to run 24 prints of his original designs and eventually buy their store outrighg, placing himself in a position where he can print high-quality tees for some of his biggest competitors. Jon Hundreds runs the operation, and we get a cool look inside with him and his team in this well-made video that gives a rare look into the production of some of the more popular products in street culture.

JAMES GEORGOPOULOS “SECOND AMENDMENT” OPENING RECEPTION TONIGHT IN LA

There are a couple of good shows opening tonight, and depending on where you are, you can expect a variety of themes. LA residents, while likely not as interested in the topic as some closer to the center of the States where the battle usually takes place, may take note of a show commenting on the Right to Bear Arms. The Guy Hepner Contemporary in WeHo will be displaying the new body of work from James Georgopoulos titled Second Amendment

Less a commentary on American rights and more one of public obsession with firearms - as seen above - the series involves large-scale, multimedia pieces with some of Hollywood’s favorite firearms. Find details for the show below.

THE AVANT/GARDE DIARIES: AV CLUB CURATED BY MIKE D

Mike D of the Beastie Boys has been given the opportunity to take a wing of Los Angeles’ most-hyped contemporary art museum - which held the highly controversial Art in the Streets exhibition just a few short months ago - and turn it into his own space filled with music and art from artists the world over. In April, Mike D will be curating a 17-day festival exhibition at the Geffen Contemporary inside the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.

Benjamin Jones, Mike Mills, Tom Sachs, Lauren Mackler from Public Fiction, and more are slated to contribute at MOCA, and the exhibition will debut on April 20, running until May 6. Find out more at the official site of The Avant/Garde Diaries.

THE KIM KARDASHIAN PARTY - NEW WORK BY XVALA IN LOS ANGELES

During the #FearGoogle campaign, artist XVALA caused controversy when he explored the public’s obsession with voyeurism by taking leaked nudes of ScarJo and wheatpasted them around town, spreading them everywhere in the real world the same way they had done on the internet. For a year he has been working on a bigger project, one where he dug through celebrities’ garbage, stealing items to turn into ready-made commentaries on public obsession.

As this project picked up steam, Forbes Magazine reported that he had been taking items from the residences of Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, and had gone so far as to turn one of Zuckerberg’s coat hangers into a nearly indestructible phallic sculpture.

His year of work has culminated in an art exhibition that is being dubbed The Kim Kardashian Party, and features polaroids and stolen mobile images of the beauty queen outfitted with glory holes as a comment on the voyeurism that envelops his work. The artist also hijacked a deflated basketball from the celeb’s trash can, turning it into a series of resin models with glory holes intact.

The show opens tomorrow, St. Patrick’s Day, at 8pm in Downtown LA, and they have green beer for your pre-pub crawl pre-party. Details below. Come say hi if you come through and take a picture with the ASCK crew!
