CUSTOM NIKE MAG BY MACHE CUSTOMS
One of the ways that customizer headrunner Dan Gamache makes headlines is by altering base shoes that are deemed untouchable by many. It’s a clever and bold approach. His recent attempt at the most coveted shoe of last year - and a silhouette that is still one of the hardest to find in all of streetwear - is the Nike MAG 2011 for the Michael J. Fox fundraising auction put on by Nike and eBay. Well, Mache did what Mache does, and altered the shoe into a custom that will sit proudly in his portfolio forever more. It’s not a heavy alteration, but that’s not the point with a base this rare.
The artist has brought custom sneakers to the forefront, and recently spoke with Nicekicks on the topic in a great interview detailing a huge shift in the public reception of the art.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO SNEAKER CUSTOMIZATION BY MACHE CUSTOMS

While most of you probably found this blog through my custom sneaker videos and tutorials, it’s been a while since I have dipped my toes in that water. Now that football season is back around I am painting shoes again (Sundays I wake up early and paint and watch football alllll day), you’ll surely see some new work - and old work I haven’t shown yet - come out of my corner. But while I have been gone a lot has changed about the sneaker world.

One of the biggest things is the introduction of blog coverage, and when that happened a lot of non-customizers got a lot of attention. Luckily, the one guy who got the most attention is Dan Gamache of Mache Customs. He is a beast with a brush and the blogs have been eating his work up. Complex recently asked him to go through the steps to sneaker customization, and while it’s very beginner-level in its complexity (no pun intended), it’s a great start for anyone wanting to try their hand at this complicated art form. Check it out here.

AMAZING SPIDERMAN CUSTOM FLIGHTPOSITE 3 BY MACHE

In the Summer of record-breaking comicbook movie releases, Foamposite and Flyposite hype, and custom sneaker design blog recognition (at least for color flips), no one has rocked it harder than Dan Gamache of Mache Customs. His latest work does exactly what good custom shoe design is supposed to do, and brings together iconic patterns and a compelling sneaker silhouette into a well-thought-out and inspired theme. The result is a shoe that would break necks without dominating an outfit. Mache is certainly one of the best out there at creating shoe designs that can work with various styles.

AIR JORDAN I “DAVE WHITE” CUSTOM BY MACHE

Dan of Mache Customs is one customizer who really liked the Dave White Air Jordan design from early this year. In further commemoration, Mache has created another custom sneaker design, this time on Air Jordan I lows with the toe dipped in gold. A white leather base with red stripes around the back mocking White’s style, and stars with black accents across the side set the pair off as arguably his best Dave White homage to date.

AIR JORDAN XIII “DRAFT DAY” CUSTOM BY MACHE

On a day where I blog all about custom shoes, check out this new one by Mache Customs, who took to a pair of Jordans with his latest custom for San Diego Charger Marcus Gilchrist. Using a monochromatic theme in shades of orange for the toebox of each sneaker, subtly embedded images depicting draft day symbols adds some flair to the already striking black, white, and violet sneakers. The Clemson Tiger color scheme gives the Js a transitional feeling inherent in a draft day appeal for the NFL.

MACHE CUSTOMS - JORDAN SON OF MARS “SON OF YEEZY” CUSTOM

Mache always has some kind of new heat to drop in blog circles, and it seems that for the last couple months he has had front page customs every week. This week is no different as Mache transcends the Galaxy hype and hops on the Yeezy wagon. The Jordan Son of Mars “Son of Yeezy” custom takes a general release colorway for a pair of Jordans that made its own splash, and makes the base seem almost like a “poor man’s Yeezy” after transforming the shoe to fit the Black/Solar Red Yeezy 2 that has everyone so excited.

An etched ‘Y’ print on the heel, patent-leather straps, and a glow-in-the-dark outsole round out this hype bait to complete the theme, and further Mache’s reign as the current king of color flips.

TOP 50 CUSTOM SNEAKERS OF ALL TIME BY COMPLEX

With custom sneakers taking off in 2012, the first legitimate Top 50 list that I have ever seen has surfaced. While absolutely gargantuan names like EmmanueLabor, 3R Customs, and Sole Junkie have been left off of the list, yours truly sees an early spot and custom shoe originators SBTG, Jor1, and Methamphibian get some much-deserved respect from a new generation of artists swagger-jacking their original ideas for a living. Mache and Jgoods help out to ensure the list has an authentic curation.

Check out this list of the Top 50 Custom Sneakers of All Time from Complex and anticipate more lists as documentation of a highly undocumented art form begins to emerge this year and on.

NIKE ZOOM KOBE VII “NERF” BY MACHE CUSTOMS

Mache has no problem taking the hottest colorway in the sneaker game right now and applying it to the hottest shoes, even if he is keeping this pair for himself. After making over $4,000 on his “NERF” LeBron 9’s, Mache decided to give the scheme one more go before moving on to something else.

The result is, in my opinion, his best “NERF” pair yet. I love the Kobe VII base, and because one can order his own colorway through NikeID, it’s a very diverse shoe. Mache didn’t feel like waiting for a Nike ID pair, however, and instead worked out of a Christmas Day “Cheetah” Zoom Kobe VII as his base.

The end result is heat and you can try to convince him to sell you a pair by contacting him here.
