NIKE AIR MAX HYPERPOSITE “STATUE OF LIBERTY”

Displayed last Sunday at the finals of the “Battle of the Boroughs” at Rivington Court in New York City, the newest Hyperposite colorway lives up to its “Statue of Liberty” moniker well with a fresh mint base and metallic copper cracked all throughout the upper. The tongue branding and swoosh are also made up of this copper color, giving a feeling of Lady Liberty to the makeup. The shoes drop in November, and also feature a stencil-style portrait of New York’s shining beacon on the insoles.

AARON ROSE: PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A BEAUTIFUL LOSER

Aaron Rose sits down with Gestalten.tv for an interview encompassing his many views on art, anarchy, and the art world as a whole, discussing some of the more diverse opinions that have defined his shotgun effect on the world of creativity. Having worked in street art, curation, film, photography, writing, music, and many other fields, Rose is addicted to creation. The artist is also addicted to talking art with friends and strangers, as anyone who has run into him at openings and art receptions around the city and the world can tell you.

One of the more inspiring artists to come out of the street art movement, the man who introduced Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, and Harmony Korine is a blast to hear every time he speaks on his passions.

Aaron Rose is one of my favorite people in the art world.

DOIN’ IT IN THE PARK: PICK-UP BASKETBALL NYC

While some of the more popular advice on the internet of late might be not to do it in the park, Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau take a different idea of a city park and document it for their new film, DOIN’ IT IN THE PARK: Pick -Up Basketball NYC. The film aims to capture the feeling and meaning of a culture that is held very dear to the hearts of millions across the nation: pick-up games, particularly in the streetball mecca of New York’s summer leagues.

I personally found both solace and community on the basketball playground as a youth, learning much of what I have applied to my life now in terms of perseverence, hard work, determination, and the importance of a competitive spirit. Assuming this film can capture these sentiments shared by all streetballers, a cast that spans five boroughs and 700+ courts - with names like Dr. J, God Shammgod and Kenny “The Jet” Smith - will prove how rough and tumble a game of such finesse can get. Traveling to over 180 courts around the entire city, it seems Garcia and Couliau are doing justice to the history of the sport in a film that comes out later this year.

LI-NING BD DOOM “PLAYOFF” CUSTOM

While the talk of the town might have been Amar’e vs. the fire extinguisher, Baron Davis made sneaker fans’ headlines as well when he rocked a pair of custom Li-Ning BD Dooms in Game 2 of the Knicks vs. Heat series. Big Doves is a custom shoe designer that captures perfectly the roots of customizing with an airbrushed “Knickstape” tag on the side of a shoe that features an orange, black, and white Baron Davis logo on the tongue.

Davis has been doing well in this series in Jeremy Lin’s absence, and despite the Knicks’ struggles, the point guard from LA has proven that he still has what it takes to compete on the opposite coast amongst the highly critical NY fan base.

INTERVIEW: THE STORY BEHIND GENERAL KNOT & CO. VIDEO

Andrew Payne of General Knot & Co. tells the story of a chance meeting in a subway in New York, and how it led to a lifelong passion for handmade ties in a proud American style. Love of fabric ties into this passion - no pun intended - in a way woven deeply into the makeup of each and every piece of fashion produced by the company. It is beautiful to see artisanship in motion, and this video accurately captures the feeling of a man doing what he loves for the reason of loving it.

RETNA MURAL AT HOUSTON AND BOWERY VIDEO

RETNA took a trip from one coast to the other to honor The Tony Goldman Wall at Houston and Bowery in New York City with a bold red and blue piece in his signature style. While we usually see subtle colors from the LA-based street artist, RETNA brought the color out in this mural that covers Brooklyn-based artist FAILE’s piece that had been up since October. A short video shows a beautifully choreographed process to create such a monumental piece.
