RECENT ART SALES BREAK RECORDS ACROSS THE BOARD

In the last month, records in art sales have been broken on multiple fronts. Pop artist extraordinaire Roy Lichtenstein’s Sleeping Girl from 1964broke a previous record of $43.2 million set by the artist at Christie’s in November by selling for $44.8 million at Sotheby’s - Christie, notably, also just sold Rothko’s Orange, Red, Yellow for the highest price of any Post-War piece at $86.9 million. But the most significant news of all in this crazy month of art sales was the transfer of Edvard Munch’s game-changing The Scream painting, which became the most expensive work of art in the world at $119,922,500. Arguably the second-most recognizable work of art in the world, the painting surpassed Picasso’s work and Giacometti’s sculpture - the only sculpture in the world worth more than $100 million - for the title. Yahoo! reports:

Besides “The Scream” and Picasso’s “Nude, Green Leaves, and Bust,” only two other works have sold for more than $100 million at auction. Those are Picasso’s “Boy With a Pipe (The Young Apprentice)” for $104.1 million in 2004 and Alberto Giacometti’s “Walking Man I” for $104.3 million in 2010.

JUXTAPOZ MAGAZINE ISSUE #136 - STREET ART

Issue #136 of the long-running contemporary and pop art magazine Juxtapoz features a large celebration of street art as it makes what is likely its victory lap in a journey through the limelight. The May 2012 edition the magazine makes a “special examination on the state of public art in 2012” as we transition to a Post-Street Art era. Public art programs such as the LA Freewalls Project and similar programs across the nation set the tone for what can be done with street art, and the value of such projects and the idea of public art in general is the focus of this month’s issue.

Interesting discussions with people all across the board, from festival stakeholders to politicians and all the way through to the artists actually working in these initiatives should make for a great read in this magazine with four limited editions covers by Steve Powers, JR, Swoon and El Mac. Features with Nuart, FAME Festival, Ron English, and Revok and Saber make the art journal worth a purchase for any street art fan here.

SKIN - FAMOUS CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS CREATE TATTOOS

This documentary fills an entrancing ~40 minutes with commentary on contemporary art and a permanently under-appreciated genre’s place within that spectrum. Tattoos have been around for many centuries, and due to their nature of becoming one with the person on whom they were created, have never had the chance to enter history books alongside more accepted forms of art like oil painting and sculpture. But as artists like Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst change what is accepted in the canon, tattoo art may have a chance to join its cousins and be remembered for what it is: a beautiful and highly dedicated art form.

Recognizing this, these very same artists that are the biggest living names in art have teamed up with a group of tattoo creators and receivers to deliver a revolutionary new concept by putting original pieces onto the bodies of people. From a butterfly tattoo on a vagina to bright chest pieces, Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons and Raymond Pettibon create a new chapter in their own careers and the story of tattoo art in this highly compelling visual essay titled Skin, directed by Ryan Hope.
