thinktankgallery: GREGORY BOJORQUEZ .45 POINT BLANK AT LACMA ARTWALK ON SATURDAY While reportedly of no relation to the legendary graffiti writer and street artist Chaz, photographer Gregory Bojorquez has created quite a name for himself in his home of East Los Angeles and beyond. His new solo show at Hardhitta Gallery displays a five-piece series of photographs from a recent bloody shootout in the streets of Hollywood. Bene Taschen is presenting the show at his pop-up art space, Hardhitta Gallery, during the LACMA Artwalk tomorrow. Taschen has described the artist’s work as merciless and looking almost staged, and certainly his new series will fit these descriptions well. GREGORY BOJORQUEZ .45 POINT BLANK AT LACMA ARTWALK ON SATURDAY

NIKE “40/40” SHOWCASE

The Nike Cortez is a shoe that has represented a lot of Nike’s success since its creation in the early 1970s. The shoe is still appreciated by sneakerheads, and to celebrate, Nike commissioned a group of Thai artists to envision what the Cortez means to them in a 40th anniversary party and art exhibition in Thailand. Is Paradise reads, and with a unique amalgam of artists of all different types, the description couldn’t be more basic. Kicking off this one-time local event is a mere two hours of time given to look at some of the city’s most iconic creatives while drinking beer and experiencing LA’s food truck culture.  After the art exhibit is a comedy show by the uproariously funny Scot Nery, which features everything from dancing girls to circus acts. TODD BRATRUD X NIKE SB ART GALLERY

Todd Bratrud has done what is just about every customizer’s dream, making a career of taking familiar sneaker models and turning them into works of art like the Nike SB Dunk Low “Freddy Krueger” and the Dunk Hi “Cheech & Chong,” both of which can be seen in the images above. PENNY “ECONOMY OF SCALE” SOLO DEBUT IN LONDON

Penny is an artist whose work often takes hundreds of intensely-focused hours to complete, and sell so quickly that shows featuring the artist aren’t too common. Luckily for British fans (an inarguably lucky bunch), London contemporary space Rook & Raven Gallery will debut the first solo exhibition of the artist’s work next month. “Economy of Scale” will feature signature stencil work alongside new ventures such as appropriated currency and even taxidermy. The artist will take his witty commentary to such topics as religion and the Victorian and Renaissance eras when the show opens on May 18th. Find details below.

TRANSMISSION LA: AV DIARIES AT GEFFEN CONTEMPORARY OPENING RECAP

If you haven’t seen the Mike D-curated Transmission LA: AV Diaries at the Geffen Contemporary yet, you are missing out. Make sure you don’t miss out completely, as the 17-day festival shuts its doors permanently on May 6th. Until then, however, the doors are open to the public and the Beastie Boy brought some of his most talented friends into a museum show that proves what site-specific installation work can be if given the room to breathe. Luckily for all, the Sky Ladder display (which carries a very sublime ambience when walking out of the almost Wonka’s Chocolate Factory feeling of the Mike D show) is open to the public while this show is up, and it’s also not to be missed.

Tom Sachs, Peter Coffin, Jim Drain & Ara Peterson, Ben Jones, and Lauren Mackler of Public Fiction each draw heavily from music in their displays, and Mike D even uses the new Mercedes as a canvas in a dazzling light show. Free musical performances happen every night at around 7:30 at the museum, as well, which is also a sort of outdoor patio for Kogi BBQ, which has a truck posted up at the museum’s entrance.
