ADIDAS TOP TEN 2000 “NIGHTMARE” PE

With Christmas approaching, all sorts of brands are releasing player editions in Christmas colorways. While green and red may be commonplace this time of year, adidas is taking another route with their lesser-known Top Ten 2000 “Nightmare” release. The shoes are themed after Tim Burton’s famous A Nightmare Before Christmas film, and reflects the classic in its design. A purple upper with hints of black makes up most of the shoes, while shades of gray take up the midsole and bottom. With wavy laces and a “12-24-12” printed on the tongue, you can pick up your own pair for $125 now at Eastbay.

LOS ANGELES - THE NEW WAVE OF BARBERSHOPS

Subculture Club is a series by Thrash Lab that showcases everything from freegans to custom motorcyle builders, and in their newest piece they chose barbering as the newest world to enter and expose to the world. Learn about what drives these artists to make dudes look good and feel better, and visit some of LA’s best shops as owners of Capsule Barbers, Bolt Barbers and Proper Barbershop speak about their creative vision and business philosophies. I was first exposed to Thrash Lab and their series with this piece, as I met the filmmakers when I was getting a haircut at Bolt. Indeed, I show up a couple times in this piece.

If you like good haircuts and bottomless beer, as well as an old-timey aesthetic with a modern mentality, check out Bolt Barbers in DTLA on Spring St. And check them out in the video above or Thrash Lab here.

STAR WARS DETOUR - NEW ANIMATED COMEDY SERIES

Longtime Star Wars satirizers, the creators of Robot Chicken are set to walk down a new pathof franchised work within the universe as Star Wars Detour kicks off. The animated show takes to hyperspace with a comedic approach, taking recognizable characters and injecting them with snarky attitudes and humorous approaches to the formerly dramatic situations of the film series. The trailer above has garnered a wide array of responses, but you can judge for yourself whether you think this is a much-needed, light-hearted, and worthwhile addition to an important universe or a short-sighted misstep in franchising your childhood memories.

MERCE DEATH - STILL IN THE SKY

Opportunism is the concept of taking any circumstance and maximizing the positive outcome. Shingo Ohno proves the philosophy useful with his one-person band Merce Death by using 50 magical flights through the air as inspiration to compose the song “STILL IN THE SKY,” entirely on his iPhone 4s. Then, with the same small piece of hardware, he created and uploaded a video for the track, which definitely gives of the feeling of making the best of any beautiful situation.

INK STORIES #1 - DANIEL RONSON

Arguably the most inspiring thing one can see is someone doing exactly what they love with a high level of aspiration and passion. Even more inspiring is to hear the story of how they got there, especially when it’s unlikely. Ink Stories starts off its series of mini-docs with a the tale of Daniel “Ronnie” Ronson who is working on his tattoo apprenticeship at London’s Jayne Doe, while soaking up every ounce of information about the art form that he can. This is what determination looks like, kids.

BRUSSELS EXPRESS - CYCLING DOCUMENTARY

Europe is known for a bicycle culture that transcends America’s by leaps and bounds, though this documentary on Brussels shows a biking infrastructure incorporated into the city worse than that of American congestion- and sprawl-affected cities like Los Angeles. This wonderful mini-doc on the city and a bicycle messenger making his way about it lays out a system that sees only 4% of its commute happening on bikes while other Flemish cities see as much as 30%. Brussels Express is a greatly composed and scored short film about a topic that should be more recognized as we move into a more congested future.
