DISSECTING CREATIVITY WITH PHARRELL WILLIAMS PT I

At Carrera Presents Liberatum Hong Kong International Festival of Culture, Pharrell Williams visited Hong Kong, one of his favorite places in the world, and sat down with Hypebeast TV to discuss his infatuation with artists like KAWS and his subsequent introduction to the contemporary pop art scene. As Galerie Perrotin Hong Kong opened with KAWS’ new body of work, the fashion and hip hop titan Pharrell reflected on what it takes to maintain a strong presence through a variety of different cultural expressions stretching as far as industrial design and film scoring.

MARC JACOBS VS. KIDULT

Last week marked the first notable response from a company being attacked by a graffiti artist in a clever way, and who better to do it than Marc Jacobs? After having tagged stores like Supreme in New York and YSL, KID set his sights on Marc Jacobs’ store in SoHo and smacked it with his signature, giant ‘ART’ tag. The purpose of these tags is to give the companies - each of whom have used graffiti in their marketing in one way or another - a taste of what graffiti culture feels like.

But Marc Jacobs didn’t sit back and take it like the other stores did; instead, he shot back by releasing a shirt documenting the ordeal with a photograph mocking that from Kidult’s site. The kicker - he is actually selling the shirt for $689 or signed by the artist for $680, with a tagline reading “ART BY ART JACOBS.”

Kidult’s response was a simple one, which has gotten him some flak for his lack of originality: he posted an almost identical shirt for 6euro and 89 cents on his site with the tagline “NOT ART BY KIDULT.” Who do you think is making their statement in a stronger way?

With high-quality materials in a Near Eastern tradition of Egyptian style mixed into a progressive design, the shoes will drop this Summer to an undoubtedly excited response.

NIKE LEBRON 9 P.S. ELITE “SOUTH BEACH”
While it may feel like it was years ago, the “South Beach” craze is one not too far in the past. “Galaxy,” “NERF,” and other colorways may have stolen spotlights of late, but customizers and overall sneaker fanatics in general can still appreciate a hot shoe in a hyped color scheme when they see it. The LeBron 8 may have released first close to home, but the Nike LeBron 9 P.S. Elite “South Beach” has another path. Retailers like Titolo have already begun stocking the shoe, which should see a release stateside on June 2nd.

In one of the better interviews I have read with a streetwear entrepreneur, Germany-based Sneakers Magazine interview Matt Fontana of SUPRA. The Vice President of Global Brands at One Distribution has a strong vision for SUPRA and it shows through in comments like “F*ck skate shoes, man.” Check out this great excerpt from the interview and see the rest of it in this month Sneakers Magazine.

There were all these different interests that I was developing that conflicted with one another because if you wanted to be a mod or a skinhead, it was a fulltime job. It wasn’t like it is now with kids who do everything. Kids ride their skateboard to football practice and have rock and hip hop songs in their iPods. Now it’s complementary, “Oh, you’re into sneakers, you’re into skateboards, you’re into tattoos, you’re into rap? Cool!” I think that really paved the way for my later success because early on, I was into crossing over. That is funny because in ’92, EPMD put out a song called “The Crossover,” and in hip hop terminology, crossing over was another term for “selling out.” That was the worst thing you could do.
