DIE ANTWOORD - DIS IS WHY I’M HOT (ZEF REMIX)

With appearances by graffiti artist David Choe, photographer Estevan Oriol and contributions by Fab 5 Freddy and Mister Cartoon, Die Antwoord’s new music video is an homage to a song that tore through the early 2000s. With a commentary on South Africa that could not be more poignant if spoken by any other emcees, Ninja and Yo-Landi speak on the racism and crime prevalent in the public image of the country since the 80s. They also make jokes about Twilight because they’re Die Antwoord, but the satirical evolution from Nelson Mandela to District 9 is a beautiful one. I wish all bands made fun home-videos like this while on tour.

SANTIGOLD - THE KEEPERS VIDEO

Assisting in the hype already built behind Santigold’s sophomore album Master of My Make-Believe is an official video just released for “The Keepers.” The latest single takes the creepy vibe put off by middle-American suburbia from the 50s, but adds to the ambience with a warily cheerful and green-tinted, darkly lit dinner scene. While the repressed nature of the atmosphere slowly turns into a crime scene, Santigold’s signature style shines through in the track beneath.

ODD FUTURE - SAM (IS DEAD) VIDEO

In the latest video from the Odd Future camp, Tyler, the Creator directs a self-inflicted massacre in a style that varies greatly from what he has done in the past. With a war movie feel, Domo Genesis and Wolf Haley spit over a dark beat as the entire Odd Future cast flees an unknown enemy in the jungle while “Sam (Is Dead)” from OF Mixtape Vol. 2 plays in the background of this short film.

AZEALIA BANKS - LIQUORICE MUSIC VIDEO

With costumes designed by Lady Gaga’s stylist Nicola Formichetti, including cowgirl chaps and an American flag and denim hybrid two piece, Azealia Banks’ new video is full of stunning visuals. Directed by Rankin, the video is full of sexy visuals and phallic objects that Banks plays with in a Wild West setting. While it may not be the critic-silencing collaboration she has promised, the flow is undeniable even if the flashiness implies a fakeness prevalent in hype hop.

VANS OTW ADVOCATE: LUPE FIASCO

Vans and Lupe Fiasco started a partnership a few months ago that has resulted in some really cool content. The latest product of this collaboration is a video showing Lupe Fiasco detailing one of his long-running philosophies: that music is largely about the performance. Fiasco breaks down his views on what makes his work shine in this short video from Vans OTW.

TABI BONNEY FT. YASIIN BEY - CHOP CHOP

A couple weeks ago, emcee Tabi Bonney returned to the game with a Yasiin Bey-collaborated track from his free music project. The song also features Ski Beatz in one of his better appearances since “Dead Presidents,” and works well with the smooth exchange of lines between the former Mos Def and Mr. Bonney. Bonney’s project The Endless Summer dropped for free on May 17th, and you can download it now.

A$AP ROCKY FT. SCHOOBLOY Q “BRAND NEW GUY” VIDEO

Bay to LA may have been the theme in hip hop last year, but the current trend is moving toward a collision of coasts in the hottest rap collabs. East Coast phenomenon A$AP Rocky has teamed up with LA-native ScHoolboy Q again for a video from the single “Brand NEw Guy” on the LiveLoveA$AP mixtape. The artists share verses in Harlem for the video directed by The ICU and the man A$AP Rocky himself.

DANNY BROWN - JAY-DEE’S REVENGE

The visuals for “Jay-Dee’s Revenge” dropped recently, as a preview for what should be expected in the upcoming posthumous album from the late J Dilla. Jay-Dee passed in 2006 of cardiac arrest after a long period of illness, but his accomplished cult status in hip hop has assured that his fan base is still thriving. Cuts from DJ Dez and lyrics by Danny Brown finish the track off, after a long relationship of collabs between Dilla and Brown. Rebirth Of Detroit drop on June 12th, so keep a lookout for the album.

DJ EROK X SPEAK! “SIGHT & SOUND” FREESTYLE

Nicki Minaj beez in the trap, but Inside Out Boy rapper SPEAK! hits the studio with a fresh new freestyle called “Sight & Sound.” The track, presented by DJ Erok, displays the odd rapping style of the Los Angeles-based emcee who goes all out to show what a unique style with diverse subject material can produce. SPEAK! comments on his new LP which drops this Summer, Gnarly Davidson and The Marlboro Men, as well as describes the challenge of breaking through to a genre of music that doesn’t so much appreciate his appearance and oddball flow, even though his good friend Kreayshawn already got her 15 minutes.

KANYE WEST TO DEBUT FILM AT CANNES
Kanye West has rapidly evolved to a multi-headed beast with a fan base rooted in both street culture and high fashion, which seems to be a much more common occurrence in hip hop celebrity of late. Next month the Cannes FIlm Festival will show what West has to offer in cinema, with his debut film readying to be shown at the prestigious festival.  West will be writing, directing, scoring, and producing the 30-minute short film that is rumored to star Kid Cudi, and word is that the film will be a thriller.
If it’s anything like the Spike Jonze and Kanye collaboration from a few years back, thrilling will be one of the lesser adjectives used to describe it. West has yet to record a single frame of the film, but sources claim that this is his usual work flow. Maybe he has been spending too much time perfecting his high fashion music video and not-so-popular high fashion line…
