LEGO BRIDGE IN GERMANY BY MEGX

After four weeks hanging from a cherry-picker, German artist Megx has finished his latest work, which transformed a huge train overpass into a giant LEGO block structure suspended in the air. Nothing but a few straight lines, some circles, and some bright and poppy colors were used in the appropriation, but the point is well-taken. The work is simple and striking and can be viewed now if you are anywhere near its home in Wuppertal, Germany. Wonder what LEGO thinks after celebrating their 50th anniversary in Australia with in a similar, blown-up style?

DUTCH ARTISTS FLOOD TUMBLR’S “NEW AND NOTABLES” PAGE
From time to time, ASCK will pay homage to one of the most influential parts of the world’s art history by highlighting Dutch artists, designers, and filmmakers. The work was done for us this week by Tumblr’s Tumblr Tuesday: Nteherlands Edition. Featuring work by dyslexic artist Gaby Zwaan who creates abstracted pop pieces obsessed with trends and fashion culture, a post-Mondrian appeal is seen in his work.
Also highlighted were entrepreneur and gadget nerd Alexander Klöpping, photographer Its Me Louis, and indie music blog Over Muziek. Check out the rest of Tumblr’s New and Notable blogs and Holla Holland!

L.A. IS PARADISE COMEDY CIRCUS SHOW - ONE NIGHT ONLY

L.A. Is Paradise is a one time only art and comedy event at and outside of the Fais Do Do near Culver City. The comedy portion of the event is created by comedian Scot Neryand directed by Stefan Haves (who creates comic acts for Cirque Du Soliel), and is a hilarious comedy on a town that is hated by many but understood by few. L.A. Is Paradise has this to say:

People that have never been here think it’s a town of celebrities, riots and drive-by shootings. That isn’t what citizens see every day and that stuff isn’t what Scot loves.

LA is Paradise has dancing girls, music, juggling tricks and Scot’s unusual perspective on the beauty and enrichment of America’s most hated town.

Tickets are just $12, but you must buy them online, as they cost $12,000 at the door, and they don’t take money.

CUSTOM SNEAKER DESIGN WORKSHOP BY TYLER WAY

Custom sneaker designer and aspiring businessman Tyler Way is hosting a custom sneaker workshop in Grand Rapids, MI this month, and tickets are far cheaper than you would expect. In the cheapest workshop I’ve ever seen, participants can expect to learn the long and arduous process behind painting on shoes in a functional manner for only $50. The artist has presented works to such superstars as Chris Paul, Rip Hamilton, and LeBron James at his NBA MVP Award ceremony. The course is on May 19th, and you can register here.

HERAKUT X LOVING THE EXILED VIDEO

Herakut is a graffiti duo from Germany whose work takes a journey from start to finish every time they grace a canvas. As laid out in this interview with Artasty, the couple has a unique process in which Hera works until finished, and then Akut picks up the can with a fresh perspective on what to add next, or vice versa. The process is full of trust, imagination, and the temporal nature of graffiti in the covering up of another artist’s work immediately after they finish. The result is a very organic-looking piece of street art.

Herakut’s earth tones are layered upon each other, creating images that blend in with the environment around them. Though it’s not just in palette through which the work presents an interest in nature. The people and animals that stand at the center of Herakut’s pieces are created as a commentary on human nature, on the ups and downs of all the small wars we fight within ourselves.

DAVE WHITE “NATURAL SELECTION” - THE HOSPITAL CLUB GALLERY IN LONDON
British contemporary artist Dave White is known to the sneaker world for a couple of ultra-hyped and hodgepodge pairs of J’s, but in the art world he is known as a bit of an abstract expressionist with a pop appeal. “Natural Selection” is a natural progression of his work, and his largest exhibiton to date. Slated to open this Summer, London’s The Hospital Club Gallery and artrepublic will play host to White’s commentary on the number of endangered species through a series of oil paintings, prints, and illustrations.
White is also inviting animators to submit shorts inspired by the Amazonian Parrot, resulting in a collaboration with the artist that will be featured in the final show, sponsored by Talenthouse. Enter your showreel and find more info here. Details on the show can be found below.

JR AND LUI BOLIN BEHIND-THE-SCENES VIDEO

Emil Horowitz takes viewers behind-the-scenes in a video recap of an art happening that should have any contemporary art follower jumping up and down just at the knowledge of its occurrence. TED-award winning photographer and world-renowned French street artist JR teams up with Chinese perspective artist and painter of immense hype Lui Bolin in this rare view into the process behind Bolin’s incredible works of art. The Chinese painter takes his subject and blends them seamlessly into their surroundings by way of screenprint ink and paints to match the background, then photographs them from a particular point of view, often making them disappear to the point that the subject is hard to find.

In a rare collaboration, JR stands before one of his more popular pieces in New York (after finishing a large series across Los Angeles County) and lets Bolin do his magic, in time disappearing into one of his own pieces much in the way many painters dive deep into their work symbolically. The end result is a beautiful teaming up of two artists from very different backgrounds inspiring those around them by doing what they do best.

ThinkTank Gallery is a blog I run much in the same format as this, voicing the narrative of the gallery of the same name in Los Angeles, CA - a gallery that I manage for my day job. Follow it for daily info on Los Angeles and art as a whole.
