LOS ANGELES - THE NEW WAVE OF BARBERSHOPS

Subculture Club is a series by Thrash Lab that showcases everything from freegans to custom motorcyle builders, and in their newest piece they chose barbering as the newest world to enter and expose to the world. Learn about what drives these artists to make dudes look good and feel better, and visit some of LA’s best shops as owners of Capsule Barbers, Bolt Barbers and Proper Barbershop speak about their creative vision and business philosophies. I was first exposed to Thrash Lab and their series with this piece, as I met the filmmakers when I was getting a haircut at Bolt. Indeed, I show up a couple times in this piece.

If you like good haircuts and bottomless beer, as well as an old-timey aesthetic with a modern mentality, check out Bolt Barbers in DTLA on Spring St. And check them out in the video above or Thrash Lab here.

STAR WARS DETOUR - NEW ANIMATED COMEDY SERIES

Longtime Star Wars satirizers, the creators of Robot Chicken are set to walk down a new pathof franchised work within the universe as Star Wars Detour kicks off. The animated show takes to hyperspace with a comedic approach, taking recognizable characters and injecting them with snarky attitudes and humorous approaches to the formerly dramatic situations of the film series. The trailer above has garnered a wide array of responses, but you can judge for yourself whether you think this is a much-needed, light-hearted, and worthwhile addition to an important universe or a short-sighted misstep in franchising your childhood memories.

KILLIAN MARTIN STATIONPARK - ABANDONED STATION SKATE VIDEO

Killian Martin grew up with a passion for surfing that could not be realized, with no ocean within six hours. With the absence of the means to realize this passion, the now world-famous skater combined two of his other intense skills in gymnastics and skateboarding to create a unique and irreplaceable style. The professional athlete is a skate video director’s dream come true, and he has created many well-done and artsy videos, including his recent visit to an abandoned waterpark outside Los Angeles that took the internet by storm thanks to the help of filmmaker Brett Novak.

This time the skater visits another abandoned skating playground in the historic Park Station, and director Juan Rayos was there to capture all of the action in a beautifully-edited style.

SANTIGOLD - THE KEEPERS VIDEO

Assisting in the hype already built behind Santigold’s sophomore album Master of My Make-Believe is an official video just released for “The Keepers.” The latest single takes the creepy vibe put off by middle-American suburbia from the 50s, but adds to the ambience with a warily cheerful and green-tinted, darkly lit dinner scene. While the repressed nature of the atmosphere slowly turns into a crime scene, Santigold’s signature style shines through in the track beneath.

AARON ROSE: PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A BEAUTIFUL LOSER

Aaron Rose sits down with Gestalten.tv for an interview encompassing his many views on art, anarchy, and the art world as a whole, discussing some of the more diverse opinions that have defined his shotgun effect on the world of creativity. Having worked in street art, curation, film, photography, writing, music, and many other fields, Rose is addicted to creation. The artist is also addicted to talking art with friends and strangers, as anyone who has run into him at openings and art receptions around the city and the world can tell you.

One of the more inspiring artists to come out of the street art movement, the man who introduced Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, and Harmony Korine is a blast to hear every time he speaks on his passions.

Aaron Rose is one of my favorite people in the art world.
